Excetional Student's Legacy Lives On
Bernard Myers was an extraordinary young man full of life and potential. In 1990, he graduated from MUS in Memphis as a National Merit Semifinalist and a member of the Cum Laude and National Honor Societies. An acknowledged student leader, Bernard was heavily involved in service projects in and out of school and was pursuing a talent as an advocate for others through Model UN and the YMCA Youth Legislature.
When Bernard died suddenly while at college, he left an extraordinary legacy of "tolerance, kindness, truthfulness and justice" with his family and friends. As one lifelong friend put it,"From the earliest age, [Bernard] was an advocate for the less fortunate and for the equal treatment of people of every kind. He formed friendships across boundaries of color, religion, nationality and sexual preference. While other students created cliques, Bernard created bridges."
In order to create a permanent remembrance for Bernard's giving spirit and to continue his legacy of community service and care, an anonymous donor has endowed the Bernard Myers Memorial Financial Aid Award, which annually will provide support for a deserving Lausanne student. To be named as the recipient of this honor, the candidate must qualify for financial aid and demonstrate:
- A sense of moral and ethical purpose as demonstrated in his/her behavior toward his/her teachers, classmates and others
- Empathy for the emotional, intellectual, social and economic conditions of others
- Assistance to others through community service
- Leadership at Lausanne or in service to others outside of the Lausanne community
The first recipient of the Bernard Myers Memorial Financial Aid Award will be announced in the spring of 2019.
Bernard Myers' parents, Malcolm and Timna, along with Bernard's brother, Daniel, and his wife, Shari, are especially honored to know that the endowment created in Bernard's memory will support and inspire generations of young people—like their Lausanne children, Max, Vinny and Zara—during their educational journey at the school they love.We are deeply honored to have been chosen as the stewards of Bernard's legacy and look forward to other opportunities to create permanent tributes on behalf of members of the Lausanne community.
